Could your business or project play a role in enhancing the local economy in Islington and building opportunities for local people?

Cooperate Islington is a new partnership supporting democratic enterprises – cooperatives – in the borough, offering local people access to decent work, food, and housing. By increasing collective business ownership for local workers, residents, and traders, we are ‘building back together’.

”The goal is to found a new network of successful co-operatives, support organisations and key institutions in Islington, working together to promote economic justice and decent livelihoods.”

– Principle Six, Coop Development Advisors for Cooperate Islington

A consortium led by Outlandish, a local technology co-operative, is working with Islington Council to launch Cooperate Islington. The initiative is currently offering seed funding (£500 – £20,000) and business advice to support a new generation of democratic businesses. We are working especially with cooperatives led by women and people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

Cooperate Islington is working with the borough’s large institutions and social buyers – ’anchors’ – to redirect spending to local businesses. This encourages the growth of local supply chains.

“We are working to make our economy fairer, more equal and more inclusive for local businesses as we build back differently. As part of this, we will be working hard to create an environment in which big businesses understand the value of working with co-operatives in their supply chain.”

~ Cllr Asima Shaikh, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy and Jobs in Islington Council
