Sheridan, an Islington resident, joined SPACE4 in 2022 when she was a full-time software engineer, working on demand management solutions to help balance the energy grid. In her spare time though, she’d been interested in alternative economics and was working on part-time studies in degrowth.
As an Islington resident, the location was perfect for her to come in regularly and meet like-minded people. The events schedule provided the perfect opportunity for her to start speaking about the new economic approaches she was studying, and this was a big factor behind her decision to quit her tech career and co-found a new organisation, Modern Money Lab UK. The hope was to provide alternative narratives to the endless stories we hear about how there’s “no money left”, and we’re therefore forced to continue down this depressing path of austerity.
The initial activities of the organisation were to hold political education events on money and the economy, and SPACE4 was the perfect location for these. The setup with the main event space and the ability to hold multiple breakout groups in meeting rooms and other spaces fostered the perfect environment for the 45-person event. Local restaurants provided catering, with a mix of Turkish, Lebanese/Syrian and sushi across the weekend. Having access to tea- and coffee-making facilities made the event so much smoother.
